Medicare & lodging costs during a transplant?
I'm getting a stem cell transplant at UCLA, where they require you to stay close to the hospital for 5-6 weeks . Does Medicare reimburse any of the projected $7,000 cost ?

Re: Medicare & lodging costs during a transplant?
I'm not sure about Medicare, but our insurance didn't offer anything toward lodging when my husband had his stem cell transplant. He had his at MD Anderson in Houston, and there were several organizations that offered either free or very low cost housing close to the medical district - we had a one bedroom apartment for 6 weeks for just a $100 cleaning fee. You might want to investigate as to whether that's an option. I think it's a pretty common practice near most of the major cancer treatment centers.
Best of luck to you!

UCLA offers 1 room at their hotel for $4,800 for 5 weeks. However, when I checked, it was full, so I have to go to on to the open market at $6,000 to $10,000 for same period.

Contact the American Cancer Society and ask if they have a Hope Lodge near the hospital. If so, it is free and they provide transportation to and from the hospital. Talk with the social worker on the transplant team to find out what other options there may be for transplant patients.

My transplant was in Virginia but had the same problem of finding somewhere to stay. I found that by calling the hotels directly and speaking to manager / special event people, they were able to offer me larger discounts being that I was staying an extended time and being associated with the hospital for medical purposes. My room was half the price of anything I had been able to find. Insurance did not cover any of the expenses, but I did have AFLAC, and they did pay part of my travel and lodging. The lodging we stayed at also had free laundry, so another plus, and we had a kitchen.

Another option to look into is Airbnb lodging near UCLA. I've stayed in places I found through them for as little as $300 for a week in a very nice 2 bedroom apartment. Each place I've stayed has been very clean with full kitchen facilities.
