The last time I saw my multiple myeloma stem cell transplant doctor, I asked about a possible allogeneic stem cell transplant in the future (I've had two autologous transplants). My sister has been asking about my 3 sisters getting tested to see if I have a family match. The doctor sent me for the HLA testing for myself. I was also given the instructions on my 3 sisters getting tested.
Now I am being billed almost $6,000 for the HLA test for myself. I did ask if insurance covered the testing for my sisters (they said yes); never thought to ask if I was covered. Medicare has paid $45 only! My insurance has been excellent and in the past has paid almost 100% of medical.
I am on Medicare and Tricare 4 Life (military) is secondary. I've checked the Medicare website and have not been able to find any specific information on whether HLA testing is covered. I am going to contact the transplant center financial person. I was just wondering if anyone knows whether it is common or uncommon for HLA testing for an allogeneic transplant to be covered by Medicare.
Thanks!
