There is a thread ("Medical Cannabis Treatments", started July 2011) with a lot of postings on the subject. From reading other articles, I think that there are some chemo side effects that arguably this could be a helpful thing. If you read that thread, you do get the impression that some of the posts are overly enthusiastic for that particular treatment option, beyond what you would reasonably expect; however, in certain settings, it may be appropriate. There are a couple of articles, in fact, where it is claimed that medical cannabis exhibits anti-myeloma effect. Of that, I personally am skeptical.

My suggestion to JPC that everything he has written is fine except his last sentence. I use it the day of the week I take dex and it helps me sleep.

I currently use cannabis oil, usually about 2.5 ml per dose late evening.
As mentioned by MMFeb16,15, it really is useful in combating the insomnia that you can get from dex, I also found that it helped tremendously with easing bone pain.
I was very skeptical prior to using it and did quite a bit of research, and there is a fair amount of anecdotal evidence on its effects on various cancers. However, this is all personal stories rather than hard facts. Nothing concrete on myeloma.
There are clinical trials running on it at the moment in Europe I believe.
I will try to find the articles and post them.

A word of caution for stem cell transplant candidates. Our oncologist told us if my husband tested positive for marijuana, he would no longer be considered for a stem cell transplant at UC Davis.
I'm glad they warned us because I had thought this would be a great idea for my hubby, since he's already a slim man. Starting Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone (RVD) tomorrow and I'm concerned about weight loss. He hasn't smoked pot since he was a teenager.

Marijuana also helps me sleep on the day of the week I take dex. I informed my doctors (oncologist, hematologist, transplant team) that I was using it for dex-induced insomnia, and they had no concerns about me using it prior to my ASCT in April. Keep in mind, though, that I live in Canada and the rules may be different in other countries.

Canada is the first developed country to do proper research on medical marijuana. It also has a very good breeding program.
I was born in Bihar, India. Alcohol was prohibited but marijuana prepared the way local prepares (from harvesting leaves, curing leaves and concoction made after mixing dry fruits such as cashew, almond, and mix in milk, banana, or any other seasonal fruits) were allowed on special occasion.
USA has limited experience and poor opinion about marijuana. No one pays a penny for marijuana in that part of India.

I'm really curious why UC Davis would exclude your husband.
I don't think inhaling anything that has been burnt can be good for you. But I feel if you want to partake, by all means enjoy (as long as it doesn't kick you out of a program). Seems like an invasion of privacy to even test for marijuana if it will be held against you.

As usual, Multibilly provides proof there are valid concerns about smoking marijuana. I can no longer with a clear conscience suggest it is OK (regardless of the definition of occasional, heavy, or recreational usage) during transplants, or for people with impaired immune systems.
I guess I don't always do the intelligent thing, but I learn something everyday.
