MD Anderson vs Sloan-Kettering for multiple myeloma

by TheHenryRoot on Thu Jan 22, 2015 3:02 am

Hi All

Interested to hear thoughts on the two cancer centers. I posted last week that I was urging a family member to visit a specialist after seeing the local oncologist (which they will tomorrow). MD Anderson is only a 5 hour drive away from them in New Orleans, but I (relative) live in New York City, so either is a good option and both seem to be the top 2, or very close, centers for multiple myeloma.

Thanks!

No firsthand knowledge of Sloan-Kettering, but my husband is being treated at MD Anderson. I can't speak highly enough of the care he's received so far. They're courteous, kind, efficient and thorough.

We live in East Texas and it's still a 4 hour drive for us. We're closer to Dallas than Houston, but it was a no brainer when he received his diagnosis from our local doctor that we were going to MD Anderson.

The time from the initial diagnosis until our appointment with MDA was 3 weeks - 3 weeks of absolute terror for me (my husband not so much). From the time we walked through the front door they've been amazing and basically held our hand every step of the way.

Hi TheHenryRoot,

And I can't speak to MD Anderson, but can talk about Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center since I am being treated there.

I feel like I have gotten state-of-the-art treatment and wonderful care from everyone at MSKCC. With them, I've gone through watchful waiting for smoldering myeloma, then, when it moved to symptomatic myeloma: induction therapy, auto SCT, consolidation therapy, and now maintenance therapy (all as part of a clinical trial). In July 2014 I was fortunate enough to achieve sCR (stringent complete response) and MRD (minimal residual disease) negative status.

I think your family member can't go wrong with either MD Anderson or MSKCC.

For what it's worth, though, when I was diagnosed as moving to symptomatic multiple myeloma 2 years ago, my myeloma specialist at MSKCC told me that, if I wanted a second opinion, he would recommend Dana Farber, Mayo, and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) as the top three myeloma centers in the US at that time. He said MSKCC was working hard to be in that top tier too, but, at that time, those were his top three.

Ironically, that comment sold me on MSKCC and this particular doctor because I appreciated his honest assessment, rather than an attitude like, "We are the best and you shouldn't even bother about thinking of anyone else."

Best wishes to your family member and to you. Please keep us posted on how things go.

Mike
