Mayo Clinic multiple myeloma guidelines 2013

by Ricardo on Mon Apr 01, 2013 10:22 pm

The Mayo Clinic has issued the 2013 update of its guidelines for the treatment of newly diagnosed multiple myeloma. The full text is available online and free of charge here:

http://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org/article/S0025-6196(13)00077-3/fulltext

The guidelines include a description of how the Mayo Clinic recommends categorizing newly diagnosed patients into different "risk" categories, and also the recommended treatments for patients in those risk categories.

Issues such as transplantation and maintenance therapy are also discussed.

I may decide to highlight some particularly interesting parts of the guidelines once I have a chance to go through them more carefully. If others get through them first and want to do some highlighting of their own, well, be my guest! :)

I find it significant that the Mayo Clinic now recommends putting off stem cell transplants for newely diagnosed low and standard risk patients and instead recommends using novel agents.

I looked at these proceedings and they seem informative. The information from the Mayo Clinics is often used at the Cancer Clinic I attend in Rapid City. The procedures with the Velcade injections changed for me with Mayo based information I am going to make sure that my Oncologist will get a copy of this guideline. i am sure I will refer back to these as it does give me some insight.
