Man with multiple myeloma died around 1800 B.C.

by wenlock00 on Sat Dec 16, 2017 8:23 am

An international team has discovered the world’s oldest known cases of breast cancer and multiple myeloma (a type of bone marrow cancer). The discoveries were made by conducting CT scans of two mummies found in the pharaonic necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa in Aswan, Egypt.

Here's a press release with information about the finding:

While myeloma itself is never a cool thing, this is a really cool article.

Thanks!

Well, I guess it was not Agent Orange, pesticides, or benzene. So what could be a reasonable cause? The environment should have been better in those days.

A relatively recent study quoted in the New York Times stated that about 66% of all malignancies stem from chance errors in the DNA copying process. On this view, most cases of cancer are due to nothing more than bad luck, something that has been around since the dawn of the universe.

In my own case, I noticed from my historic medical record that pernicious anaemia has been an recurrent issue 10 years prior, and it's my understanding that it can result in a 50% increased risk in acquiring multiple myeloma.

I do have a healthy diet with plenty of greens, but my folate levels have been borderline, and there is also a complex relationship with B12 and folate and supplementation.

Unfortunately, my multiple myeloma consultant does not monitor my B12 or folate.
