Hi everyone,
I'm a little curious about magnesium.
When I was diagnosed in March, it was found I have multiple lesions in pelvis, both femurs, one in sacrum, and early changes in humerous. My plasma cells in bone marrow were 80% and M-spike was 9000.
When my doctor told me about the diagnosis, he was quite shocked as he had been doing blood tests relating to anaemia and low hb, but in all the tests my calcium has been in the normal range with no changes in previous tests over about 12 months.
Can taking a magnesium supplement affect calcium levels in the blood?
I don't think my doctor failed in my diagnosis, I was just unlucky and he was pretty upset. Just wondered if any of you knew anything about this.
Keep smiling!
Jen

Re: Can magnesium supplements decrease blood calcium levels?
Jen,
If I understand your question correctly, you are wondering whether magnesium supplementation could have prevented your calcium from increasing. The short answer to your question is that the intake of magnesium should not have led to falsely normal calcium levels.
Low magnesium can sometimes cause low calcium or potassium, but the converse is not true.
It is not surprising that your calcium levels were normal. In fact majority of the patients with myeloma do not have abnormally high calcium levels at diagnosis.
Also, the progression to myeloma or a related disorder can occur over a short period of time and sometimes without a warning. So you should not assume that your myeloma would have been easily detectable for a long time prior to your diagnosis.

Re: Can magnesium supplements decrease blood calcium levels?
Thanks for your reply.
I have continued with Mg supplements but was curious about calcium levels as had read about some people having strange dreams attributed to high calcium at time of diagnosis.
I have also been a bit head in the sand about the whole diagnosis and decided to stop worrying about how much I don't know and start learning.
It's only gonna help!
Thanks
Jen
