M Spike?

by gunner on Sat Sep 21, 2013 6:59 pm

My husband's haematologist tracks his IgG levels which have been rising 2 years post transplant and he has now started Rev/Dex.Is this the same as tracking the M spike ? I'm still unclear as to what exactly it is.
He also has bone damage in back, pelvis area.He has had no bone marrow biopsy since diagnosis 3 years ago, no urine analysis etc.but has had MRI, skeletal surveys etc. Is this enough to keep track of his myeloma status?

The bone imaging is appropriate. Many physicans use the total IgG to follow but most myeloma doctors will want to follow the M-protein or M-spike from the serum protein electrophoresis. Ask that the M-protein is also quantified.
