M-spike down, but plasma cell percentage still high

by Chelseagal on Thu Jul 23, 2015 7:11 pm

Hubby was diagnosed in November 2014. He has had 5-6 cycles of chemo – dex, Revlimid, and Velcade – but with interruptions due to sepsis twice and pneumonia.

When diagnosed, his plasma cell percentage was 95%. He was due to have his stem cell transplant in a week's time. All his numbers look great, and his M-spike is 0.5 g/dL (5 g/l), down from 13.5 g/dL. But the cancer specialists just called and said his bone marrow biopsy showed his plasma cell percentage is still high at 80%, so they can't do it.

I am devastated. Has this happened to anyone else and what was the next step?

I just don't understand how he can feel better and everything else looks good, but there still be 80% there. :( He also has myelofibrosis. He is 55.

I had the same situation in 2011. Have your doctor check for CD20 expression. I had 4 treatments of Rituxan (rituximab, MabThera) and it worked. Good luck!
