Drop in M-spike - does it mean anything?

by dolphinnose on Mon Dec 07, 2015 10:03 am

I have been diagnosed with MGUS about a year back. The last few tests have shown an M-band / M-spike of 1.30 g/dL (13 g/L). My latest serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) test says it is 0.96 g/dL (9.6 g/L).

I have been getting my SPEP tests done at the same lab. Can I consider that my M-spike is getting reduced and possibly it may disappear completely?

Or the difference is not really big enough from 1.30 to 0.96 to feel happy about?

Thank you

Hi -

I too have MGUS (IgG) and 4 years ago when diagnosed my M spike was 1.5 and now it is 0.8. I asked the same question when my M-spike started going down and was told MGUS does not go away.

Yes, you should be happy it is going down.

Like you, I go to the same lab once/year for testing. I've taken Synthyroid for low thyroid for years and, when diagnosed with MGUS, reduced the dosage and question if this is why the spike went down.

Thank you Diane for your reply. Well, was hoping it would go down to zero :-)
I too have thyroid and I take 25 mcg but I have not changed my dose. My MGUS and thyroid had surfaced around the same time though.
I guess I will take this drop in M-spike as blessing disguise :-)

Thank You

Dolphinnose,

Your M-spike is not going to go away, but it could very well bounce around in a range for the rest of your life. With MGUS and SMM, one's M-spike will go up and down and change like the tides.

You can see how my numbers ebb and flow here:

Thanks Multibilly. I have been following this forum for a while and you have been a great contributor. Thanks for the support and help you have been providing to people like me.

I guess for now I will be happy with the drop and will see what is in store in the future. I have been hitting the gym ever since I was diagnosed with MGUS and probably it is helping me. I am vegetarian so no red meat :-)

Thanks again

Good morning all!

My M-spike was 1.1 g/dL at diagnosis 2 years ago. Then: 1.0, 1.4, 1.6, 1.4, 1.6, 1.4, and now, this month, 1.3! I'll take it!

But I wanted to also say I had taken levothyroxine for low thyroid for many years, at 50 mcg, but it was increased to 75 mcg 15 months ago. So, Dianem and Dolphinnose, I don't believe there's any correlation.

Blessed day and low M-spikes, all!

Tiaannabelle
