Low Grade Fevers

Grandpa undergoing Velcade chemotherapy - just completed 5th dose 4 days ago. Had fever the day he was given Velcade after fever was controlled. Again has 100.4 fever today. Is it normal to have low grade fevers or can it be a cause for concern? Should any special precaution be taken other than giving fever reducing medicines?

Hi .... you should call your cancer centre and let them know that you need to talk with an oncology nurse about the fevers.. There is probably a system in place to field calls about patient problems...that is how it is at our cancer centre. We were advised to call them about medical problems regarding the chemotherapy, and not to go through the hospital's emergency dep't. Then the medical oncology staff can be informed about your grandpa's progress, make notes on his chart, and advise you too!

Thanks for the reply .. yes we did do that and they gave us a few medicines.

He feels weak but other than that ok .

At the "introduction to chemotherapy" class EJ took prior to starting Velcade, we were told to call the onc's office anytime his fever went above 100.5. This happened once when he was on the Velcade and we were told to go to the emergency department for a chest x-ray. Their big concern was pneumonia. Did anyone actually check your grandpa out before perscribing fever reducers? I'd make sure someone actually sees him about this.
