Low dose naltrexone and Revlimid

by well365 on Mon Jul 30, 2012 8:24 am

Has anyone taken low dose naltrexone when on Revlimid maintenance (Revlimid -15 mg every other day for one month)?

Thank you!

I have not but it was recommended to me by a certain doctor that I consult with occasionally. I did some research and found that I cannot take low dose naltrexone (LDN) because I am on opioids (hydrocodone). You can't be on certain pain meds to take LDN.

I was on low dose Revlimid for nearly two years before I recently came out of remission.

I have not taken naltrexone, but I have taken a similar medication called buprenorphine (also Subutex or Suboxone). I started it to help get off of Vicodin, Oxycontin, and Ativan, but for the last nearly 4 years have been taking it with gabapentin to manage pain from peripheral neuropathy.

It has been a good combination, but the bupe has some side effects. For example, if you ever need to take opiate pain meds for something else, you are out of luck, as the bupe blocks their action. I have read people blaming it for everything in the world, including ingrown toe nails!

I would suggest doing a lot of reading on forums for other users before you start.

Not really relevant, but humorous in a morbid way ...

I had an "exploratory" laparoscopy a few years back. I was on naltrexone to help keep me from beer, staved off the craving. In the recovery room, I kept saying I was in pain. The nurses gave me more morphine. I was still in pain. The nurses said they couldn't give me any more morphine. I laid there with tears rolling down my face when finally the anesthesiologist came in and checked my chart and saw I was on naltrexone. Yep, all that morphine had zero effect. Be very aware of this my friends.

Chemo and booze must be a tragic combination. Glad I got out from under that bear.

Good for you, Alaskan Meg! Didn't know anything about naltrexone before. Myeloma has certainly been educational in the health sense. Hope your better lifestyle helps you to wrestle down the bear of myeloma too!
