leukemia gene therapy trial

by marett on Wed Aug 10, 2011 8:15 pm

I read about this today:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2011/08/10/leukemia-gene-therapy.html
Could this something that they would test on multiple myeloma?

It is too early to predict but certainly this approach may have promise in other diseases like multiple myeloma.

Hi Boris, It is my understanding that similar gene therapy trials for myeloma are now under way at both the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Maryland. Dr. Carl June, who with his UPenn team led to this summer's internationally reported success with leukemia in three patients, is involved. I believe they are reinfusing the genetically altered T cells after ASCTs. Hopefully, we will know something about the efficacy of the trials in about a year.
