In 2011, I was diagnosed Stage 3, light kappa, IgA with chromosomal abnormalities. I went into a clinical trial with MLN9708 [ixazomib]. After 4 cycles, I went into complete remission (CR). No maintenance.
My remission lasted almost 3 years. It was a difficult decision, but I felt it was the correct one for me. I did have my stem cells harvested.

Re: Length of first remission with or without SCT
I was diagnosed with Stage II IgG Kappa light chain multiple myeloma in Feb 2009.
I was put on VRD (Velcade infusion once a week along with 40 mg of dex, 10 mg of Revlimid on 21 days off 7, and monthly infusion of Aredia). That protocol lasted nearly a year and I reached a complete response (CR). I did not have a measurable M-spike so my myeloma was/is primarily tracked through sFLC assay.
Since then, the initial protocol was backed down to what I would call a maintenance level. I currently receive a Velcade injection (subcutaneous) once every two weeks and 8 mg of dex at the same time. I get Aredia once every 3 months.
I did develop a serious infection back in July of 2012 and was taken off of Revlimid at that time. I started infusions of IVIG monthly, which I still receive. I have been in continuous although reduced treatment from the beginning. I have not had any long-term treatment holidays.
I have been in a remissive state ever since (6 plus years) but note that I have started to show a low level M-spike, which has grown to 0.3 g/dL. My sFLC assay continues to look good and I have not developed any more bone lesions. I did not get an ASCT.
