Hi,
My mother experiences pain in her legs during / after treatment (Velcade). It could be described as sore, tired, and tender legs. She finds it challenging to walk longer distances and sit still in car for longer periods.
I suppose that this is a common side effect and wonder if there is some advice to minimize this problem?

Yes, my 48-year old husband had the same experience. His last Velcade treatment was in August / September. He did have an auto stem cell transplant. He would have terrible pain and weakness spells. It has gotten better, but has yet to fully go away.
I have heard these side effects with Velcade can improve.

Be careful. I had leg pains and did not tell my doctor. Turned out the Velcade was damaging my nerves and one suffers from peripheral neuropathy. Just mention it to your oncologist.

With a syringe, that would be what is called subcutaneous Velcade. Believe it or not, that is the mode with the lesser peripheral neuropathy.
In case you have not heard of it before, one fairly easy treatment that was effective for my wife, and also reported by others (but it does not seem to work for everyone) is to apply Palmer's cocoa butter to the extremities. In our case it seemed to delay onset (if done before the feeling started), and lessen the duration and the depth of the peripheral neuropathy after the subcutaneous Velcade shots. Cocoa butter, of course, is a treatment that would not have any bad side effects, so it would be worth a try.
Your mother should work with the nurses and get your mother's periperhal neuropathy condition graded. The grades go from zero to 4. My wife's grade turned out to be 0 to 1, not bad, but definitely noticeable. With subcutaneous Velcade, it is rare to get grade 4. At grade 3, they tend to add a medication like Lyrica (pregabalin), or adjust dosage, or maybe eliminate Velcade in favor of another drug.

Sorry to hear about the pain in the legs that your mother is experiencing.
Just to be on the safe side, you could ask your oncologist if this could be caused by blood clots or deep vein thromboses! As a patient taking chemotherapy (Revlimid), I need to take low dose aspirin to help to prevent blood clots. Pains may be investigated by ultrasound, I think.
