Hello to all,
Thank you to everyone who contributes to this site,I'm very nervous to be here so please excuse my rambling. I'm posting from Toronto,Canada
Recently my wife had some x-rays done that showed minor degenerative changes (arthritis) in the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th fingers and a minimal osteophyte formation in the 2nd mcp joint without any fractures in her left hand and prominent metatarsal head with early osteophyte formation present in the 1st mtp joint in her right foot and also a small planter spur in her heal with no other abnormalities
Other lab test were done just to be diligent and not because of any symptoms, these are the results I'm hoping some one would be kind enough to help me make sense of these so that I can make smarter decisions moving forward without over-reacting
Rheumatoid factor, uric acid and calcium levels were all good
Complete Blood Count including
Hemoglobin - 130 g/l
Platelets - 309
RBC - 4.43
WNC - 9.6
Lymphocytes - 2.11
etc. also all good, they were all within the lab ranges.
Creatinine, kidneys, liver also good, A1c slightly elevated for the first time ever at 6.2, also a chemical urinalysis found a microscopic amount of blood in the urine but this comes and goes
(I'm thinking that this doesn't affect any of the other results).
Protein Electrophoresis
Total protein 69 (60-80) g/L
Albumin 36 (34-45)
Alpha globulin 1 4 (2-4)
Alpha globulin 2 8 (5-10)
Beta 1 globulin 5 (4-6)
Gamma globulin 12 (7-15)
Beta 2 globulin 7 (2-5) g/L (high)
Lab notes:
The serum protein electrophoresis shows an isolated increase of
beta 2 fraction there appears to be a small monoclonal protein
present.
Gammopathy Screen
Lab notes: M-protein detected, a faint IgA kappa
IgA 6.28 (0.69-3.82)
IgG 10.9 (7.2-16.9)
IgM 1.90 (0.63-2.77)
Serum Free Light Chain Assay
Kappa 65.6 (3.30-19.60 mg/L)
Lambda 14.3 (0.26-26.30 mg/L)
Kappa:lambda ratio 4.59
(These 2 elevated numbers have me worried)
Lab notes:
Supports the diagnosis of a monoclonal gammopathy
borderline elevated kappa free light chain.
A 24 hr urine collection for light chains is to follow.
I'm waiting to see a hematologist about these results. If anyone could recommend a good hemotologist / oncologist in Toronto (or other parts of Canada, New York, etc ), it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, any advice on diet in terms of anything to eat more of, or foods to avoid or possible nutritional supplementation and dosages (ie. vitamin D, turmeric, or anything that may help with the bones or arthritis) would also be much appreciated
Also she was doing some paraffin wax treatments because it seems to really help bring down the pain and swelling from the arthritis. However, I've become a little concerned about the toxins in the wax and the process in general, especially with the elevated a1c levels. Does anyone know if the paraffin wax treatments could be harmful in anyway. I was thinking of trying beeswax with BPA free plastic bags or a non toxic heating pad if i can find one.
Once again a big heartfelt thank you to the people who contribute to this site and to anyone who is kind enough to share any information.

Re: Lab results show a monoclonal gammopathy
Hi David,
There are lots of good hematologists in Toronto; Toronto has one of the top cancer hospitals in the word (Princess Margaret).
Princess Margaret Hospital has a sub department just dedicated to myeloma.
Here is a link to all the haemotologists licenced with the College of Physicians who are in the city of Toronto proper (not including neighbouring Peel or Durham Regions etc.)

Re: Lab results show a monoclonal gammopathy
Hello David Eight,
I'm also in Toronto. My wife was diagnosed with MGUS back in 2002, was tested annually until last year when she was diagnosed with smoldering multiple myeloma, where she was seen by a haematologist at North York General. They conferred with the myeloma department at Princess Margaret where's she's being treated.
There are plenty of excellent haematology oncologists in Toronto. Getting to see them is usually dependent on whom your family doctor can refer you to. We also asked for a second opinion from Princess Margaret despite having an excellent haematologist.
We considered going to clinics in the US; however, research convinced us we have top doctors and facilities here.
Please keep us posted and maintain good spirits.
