I just lost my mom who was dx with multiple myeloma approx 11 years ago. She was not treated for the first 6 years as multiple myeloma was not acting up or should we say was in a smoldering state. Her multiple myeloma needed treatment about 4 years ago and had started with Revlimid but had a sever reaction and moved to Velcade. She did well with Velcade, all her levels were good and she had little or no side effects. Then last year she decided to get her knee replaced, after consulting her doctors they gave her the green light. Surgery went well, however her body from within was not doing well. She had a gap in her treatment for approx 6-8 weeks and when she started her treatment again (Velcade) it was no longer working. She ended up in the hospital with a very high WBC approx 20,000. After further testing her oncologist confirmed that Velcade was no longer working and her multiple myeloma was now becoming plasma cell leukemia. Her plasma cell was 16%. He told us about Kyprolis, we went with it. She had 1 full cycle and boy was she weak...Kyprolis seemed to be working. I took her in for a treatment and told the doc that she was no longer eating he told me not to worry. That same night she went into acute renal failure. Her labs came back and 0 plasma cells in her counts! This was good news! But now her kidneys were shot. All the junk cells that were dying were clogging the kidneys, she didn't stay with us much longer. As she was in the hospital for 3 weeks she was not being treated for multiple myeloma as she was far to weak. During this gap Plasma cells were back in her blood 16%. She was released and was going to be treated, but never made it for the treatment she ended back in the hospital and plasma cells were now at 48%, we tried one last ditch effort of Kyprolis lowest dose and it started to work however she now developed pulmonary edema and ended up on a ventilator. Kyprolis worked but after 2nd day plasma cells were near 60%.
It is hard...i don't know if her kidneys failed with Kyprolis but make sure your doctor is monitoring kidney function if you are going to take this med, also noticed that Pulmonary edema is another side effect.
