Kyprolis (carfilzomib) as maintenance therapy?
Has anyone considered maintenance therapy with Kyprolis (carfilzomib) together with dexamethasone? What are opinions on it?

Hi Michelle,
I guess not too many people have been on Kyprolis maintenance therapy.
There has been a trial that's been looking into it. The trial is closed, but you can read about the details here:
http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00884312
What I find interesting is that there don't seem to be any reports so far of the results of the trial, even though it's been going on since 2009.

Re: Kyprolis (carfilzomib) as maintenance therapy?
Yes Ricardo it seems I am the lone soldier.
So far so good. I am still in remission. Is it the Kyprolis that is keeping me in remission or would I have still been in remission with the maintenance. No one knows.
Side effects are lack of tyaste buds and everything has a very medicinal smell.
Thnks for the Clinical trial link.

Hi meeshymeesh,
Nice to hear from you.
I'm sure some other people will report about their experiences on Kyprolis maintenance therapy in the longer term. Right now, the drug isn't approved for maintenance therapy. In fact, I don't think any myeloma treatment currently is. But since Kyprolis is so new, it's not surprising that it isn't being used that often as maintenance therapy.
How long have you been taking Kyprolis as maintenance?
Take care.

Re: Kyprolis (carfilzomib) as maintenance therapy?
I started Kyprolis with dex and Revlimid in November 2012 after a relapse following Revlimid Velcade Dex therapy in the first few months of 2012. I am happy to say that as of today I am in remission with mspike zero. Now I need to decide how to proceed... stay on Kyprolis 6 times a month or drop down to some lesser frequency, or stop altogther? I have no idea
Re: Kyprolis (carfilzomib) as maintenance therapy?
Hi Ricardo
I have just finished my 2nd of Kyprolis maintenance. I have it on days 1,2,8,9,15 & 16. Every other month.
Unfortunately at the beginning of my last cycle my blood showed m spike of 0.1 so I am going to start Revlimid next week. My specialist e courageous me to start with Kyprolis and Revlimid but me being the naive patient said I just wanted to do Kyprolis alone.
Would it have made a difference if I had started Revlimid at the beginning with Kyprolis... ? Who knows.
I am seeing the Dr on Tues for more blood testing/results.

Psalsich
What have you decided to do?
It is always so hard to decide. I have just told myself that there is no right or wrong route/answer. If there was all the multiple myeloma dr's would follow the exact same treatment protocol.
Just be confident that the decision you make is the right one for you and your family and your circumstance.
Good luck at let us know how things go.

Re: Kyprolis (carfilzomib) as maintenance therapy?
Dr. Abonour at IU Simon Center, Indpls., recommended a Kyprolis/Dex (4 mg. only) on Days 1, 2, 15, 16 for another year, since Jerry's multiple myeloma is down to 10% from 40% last summer. We decided against Revlimid since it would cost us $3000 per month even with Medicare Part D, since it's in pill form.
