Kyphoplasty

I started my first chemo treament (Velcade) and Revlimid on Tuesday. So far just had a little nausea with it. I also found out from recent xrays that on the low back pain I spoke of in the earlier posts, on Back & Muscle Pain, I have some disc narrowing on L4-5 and L5-S1 and some deformity on L1 that were not there on the previous xray in Aug 2012 and more compression fractures on T12 not present earlier. Report also shows a 1 cm lucency in the right lieum of the right sacroiliac joint that was not present before. My doctor has talked to me about kyphoplasty and I said no, I am now considering it if it will help me with this low back pain, or see if there is some type of surgery that can be done on the low back to help. As of now I am using a cane and he got me a rollator walker to help get around as the pain is really bad and have had a very difficult time getting around.
Has anyone had this surgery and did it help you? I would appreciate any in put on this.

My Dad had compression fractures on three of his lumbars (I can't remember which). One had totally collapsed, and the two were damaged significantly. The doctor performed Kypho on the damaged ones--the one that had collapsed cannot be fixed. This minimally invasive procedure took less than one hour (but may not be that short, because usually they do bone marrow biopsy while doing Kypho, as one's spine are already exposed, anyway), and the very tiny wound healed in a matter of two to three days. Dad walk and sleep pain-free, immediately. If your doc suggests it, I would recommend you to do it, it's a very minimally invasive procedure, and the result is instant (for us).

I would highly recommend Kyphoplasty if appropriate. It is a relatively safe procedure that can help significantly. It is one of the supportive care measures that has great bearing on patients well-being.

Will be out for a few days, saw my doctor this morning and he is admitting me to the hospital Tuesday morning. He said he wants to call in a surgeon and a my radiation doctor and see what needs to be done. The pain is getting much worse and he does not want to wait around trying to do this as an out patient.
So I will let you know what happens in a few days.

Good luck, Nancy! Please keep us posted as to what you decide to do for your back pain. I know just how awful that can be...am better now but it was definitely rough going through the compression fractures and the pain they caused.

I'm back, spent 4 days in the hospital, didn't think it be that long. Kept me on morphine every 2 hrs while in the hospital, all I did was sleep, but I guess I did need the rest.Of course nothing was found that would cause my pain. I had x-rays, mri, cat scan, and all it showed was a small fracture in the low back. My onc called in a neurologist and my radiation doctor, they all got together on this and decided the fracture was not enough for surgery and the area had already had radiation with no help. So the neurologist gave me an epidural in low back saying it would either have immediate relief or not much help at all.
Well the out come is not much help, it did relieve a bit of the pain making it a little easier to get up and down other than that no relief at all. He said I could get them a couple times a year.
So for now I just don't know can't live with this pain, if it were anywhere else like the mid back at least I could walk and do other things, this way I am limited on everything I do.

I have at present 6 vertebrae with compression fractures in the Thorasic area I had 3 of the 6 fixed with kyphoplasty it took away about 40% of the pain.I was told the other 3 were too old or ( i think ) but I was told the surgeon would only do the bottom 3 Thorasic vertebrae. It was a short, non event type surgery with little or no after effects. The procedure removed about 40% of the pain making it possible for me to lie totally down flat. Before the procedure I could not lie down at all without extreme agony ( getting a MRI totally disabled me for over a week ) My advise based on my experience yes it is something you might do to help reduce your pain from the fractures. I would do it again in a heartbeat if needed. Hope that helps.

Just came from oncologist, my IgA went from 1920 to 1100 in only 3 weeks of chemo.
Doc was very happy and so am I, in just a short time.
Will see my other doctor on Wed. about the pain.

Well was back in the hospital for another 4 days, this time horrible headache and violent vomiting all night on the 20th by morning couldn't make it to work didn' answer texts from co-workers, they know if I don't call or show up something is wrong, 2 co-workers showed up and call the rescue squad. Dr. ran more tests MRI/MRA blood work, etc.
No answers, everything came back good. Don't know what is going on. Could it possibly a late delay on the Velcade? Going to see doctor next week to discuss this, their all happy there is nothing showing up, so am I but what is going on?
