Can kyphoplasty be used to remedy compression fractures if the fractures are older than 3 months old? How long after an auto stem cell transplant (SCT) can this procedure be done?
My husband was diagnosed in May with multiple myeloma. At that time he had backpain. We were told in July by his SCT doctor that, after his 6 cycles of Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone (RVD), he had permanent damage to his spine. Since he was having a SCT, I was waiting to address the back. Now, I am afraid we waited too late.
He has a couple of medium compression fractures. These were identified in late August.
I want to know what options may exist to remedy the pain beyond throwing pain meds at the problem. I also want to stabilize his spine to slow / prevent further damage.

Re: Kyphoplasty for fractures older than 3 months?
Imaupin,
I received a similar initial induction therapy as your husband. I was diagnosed in August after I had my first kyphoplasty to repair two vertebrae fractures. After my ASCT, I told my transplant doctor that I was still experiencing back pain. He referred me to a neuroradiologist and after two MRIs, I had a total of eight vertebrae cemented with two kyphoplasty procedures. The final procedure was done almost a year after the first. My pain is minimal but I feel my back is now the most stable part of my body. Yes, you can have fractures repaired greater than 3 months later.
Good luck and I hope this helped.

Post kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty, the spine structure can be stabilized, including the use of titanium rods; in many cases, this is done within one surgery.
(Some people have kypho/vertebroplasty done as an outpatient procedure; however, in a myeloma/SBP situation, this usually a full surgery as the lytic lesion needs to be removed)
