Re: How long does it take for kidneys to recover?

by Margep3 on Fri May 15, 2015 7:42 am

In 2009, I was admitted to hospital with renal failure. I had repeated sinus infections and felt awful from antibiotics. When I started shaking, I knew something was radically wrong. My creatinine was over 8 and I was immediately put on dialysis. My platelets were very low and a kidney biopsy could not be performed at that time. A hematologist was brought in and, after transfusions, my platelets increased enough to have kidney and bone marrow biopsies, and I was confirmed with lambda multiple myeloma.

I was on dialysis for six months and have been treated with Velcade and dex since. My creatinine today is 2.3. I follow a strict renal diet and drink a lot of water to stay hydrated and flush chemo from kidneys.

Sorry for the late reply, Thanks for the responses, all give me hope! We met with the kidney specialist last Thursday and she said that if it continued the this direction that we would be looking at dialysis in the next few weeks. Today labs showed improvement! GFR went from 13.9 to 16.4 and creatinine went from 4.4 to 3.8 so we are happy it is finally moving in the right direction!! I am so thankful for this website and hope to be help to new members as you have all helped me! God bless all of you...

I am sad to report that I lost my dear husband Larry on July 6, 2015. He had been doing so well that it came as a complete shock!

He was ready to complete his 12th treatment (3rd of 4 cycles) of CyBorD on July 7. His kidney numbers from June 30 were the best that had been since diagnosis and we were so hopeful. We were planning on a quick diving trip between his last chemo and his SCT in September. In fact, he filled out the paperwork for his SCT hours before his death. Still not sure what happened, the autopsy was inconclusive.

I woke up in the middle of the night and he said he couldn't breath, I called 911, and he collapsed within a minute. I did CPR until the paramedics arrived, but we were never able to revive him.

I am heartbroken to lose the best part of me, my laughter, my love. He never suffered, he was handling the treatments incredibly well and for that I am thankful. We went to Lake Powell the weekend before he passed, and as an elected county official, he even walked in two parades in our small towns on the 4th of July.

I keep all of you in this fight in my prayers.

Love, Stacey

So sorry Stacey about your loss when it seemed things were going well for your husband.

When I developed pneumonia suddenly, following days of temperature spikes but no symptoms of chest infection I too very suddenly developed a a problem with breathing. I was already in hospital so fortunate.. My kidney function was affected too and this delayed discharge until baseline recovery. Myeloma is a complex disease and the treatments can be hard on the body on top of the damage from the disease. I hope you can take some comfort at this difficult time in knowing he did not suffer.

Stacey, I am so sorry to hear about your husband; I can't even imagine the shock over the suddenness of it, especially since he was doing well. Myeloma is a tough, unforgiving disease and the treatments are tough on the body even if you appear to be doing well. I hope you can find peace in the memories the two of you made together and you have my most sincere condolences.

My creatinine was as high as 9. Now down in the 6 range (and low as 3) since my diagnosis in May. Doing dialysis 3 days a week.

My kappa light chains were as high as 20,000 when I was in the hospital. After 1 round of chemo, they were down to 3,000. I have an appointment tomorrow with the oncologist.

Just wondering how much longer until my kidneys get better? I am trying to work part time around all the treatments. Dialysis just sucks so much out of me physically, and it costs me 12 hours a week minimum at work.

Hope all is well with everyone.
