Tess, the stem cell center at VCU is separate from the Massey Cancer Center. The four doctors, Dr. McCarty, Dr. Clark, Dr. Chung, and Dr. Toor, are specialist in multiple myeloma.

The set up for stem cell transplant, they have their own ward, so everyone in there is a stem cell patient, and their outpatient center is also a separate office, the staff knows your name and always so friendly and helpful. They have a pre-transplant and post-transplant coordinator, so you have a person to call or email with every questions you come up with. That was so helpful for me when getting ready for my transplant.

My oncologist suggested VCU to me as a second opinion and they have been setting my meds etc and coordinating with my oncologist so I can do most thing locally. My transplant was in 2012. I had tandem transplants and received complete remission so good they recommend I not start any maintenance meds. Unfortunately it has come back, but with Revlimid and dex, I have gotten it under control again.

I know there are great centers for you to consider, I did like being somewhat closer to home so my checkup visits have been easier and I can't say enough about the wonderful care I had there.

Keep the positive attitude,
