Assuming there is a suspicion of multiple myeloma, he/she will likely order the additional laboratory tests listed here:

http://myeloma.org/ArticlePage.action?tabId=1&menuId=322&articleId=3177&aTab=-1

He/she may also request a full body skeletal xray survey at that time, or wait to get the results of the above laboratory tests before ordering such a test.

You would then go back in a few days later to discuss the results of those tests to see what's up. If the tests suggest multiple myeloma, he/she would then likely order a bone marrow biopsy to get a better confirmation and idea of the stage of the disease.

Suggest you prepare any questions you have in writing and take notes (or record) during your meeting with the doctor. Make sure to also get copies of your lab and imaging results. They will prove very handy to have later if you should have multiple myeloma.

What is your M-spike level (include the units of measure)?

Best of luck to you and I hope things work out well for you.

Good reply, Mountainbilly. I'd like to add a couple of suggestions:

1. Definitely go your appointment with a list of questions. I was diagnosed in 2009 and still go with a list of questions. It's my deal with my oncologist -- he asks his questions and I ask mine, based on the latest things I've been reading or thinking about. It also helps both of us confirm which meds I'm taking, at what dosage.

2. Take someone with you to take notes. Myeloma info is confusing at first, so having a notetaker helps. My oncologist encourages his patients to bring someone with them and prefers when they do. I went to my first appointment alone -- big mistake -- and then always had someone with me until I was finished with my induction treatment and stem cell transplant.

3. Ask about your proteins, calcium level, and red and white blood count levels, as well as the M-spike. You can have an M-spike, with everything else normal.

Good luck and please let us know how you are doing.
