I was wondering if anyone had experienced jaw numbness while on pamidronate (Aredia)? I have recently undergone radiation therapy for my sternum and clavicule for myeloma tumors. And after my last pamidronate treatment, my chin, lower lips and lower front incisors have no sensation.
I have heard of peripheral neuropathy in Velcade treatments, but this is a first. A CT scan was done on Friday so waiting for results.

Are you receiving any other treatments for your myeloma at this time in addition to Aredia?
Perhaps you could let us know your treatment history in general, as it may not be the Aredia that is the source of the numbness.
Neither numbness nor neuropathy are listed among the common side effects of pamidronate (Aredia) in the U.S. prescribing information for the drug,

Dear carorivard1973,
I am not aware of this as a direct side effect of pamidronate (Aredia). However, a CT to look for a plasmacytoma that could be causing a nerve compression is the right thing to do. Also, I think you should go to your dentist to ensure there is no dental infection that is causing the symptoms.

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions, Caroline. It may not be anything serious. But I agree with Dr. Voorhees that you should have the area that is numb checked out. Worrying about it isn't going to make the problem go away.
For what it's worth, Revlimid can cause neuropathy, although I don't know how common it is for Revlimid neuropathy to be in the chin area.

I am Board certified in nothing,.... however, I have some experience/study in this area.
Your description is a classic Mental (Chin button) nerve irritation / compression.
Compression could be from a variety of sources: ie. mechanical compression from a Neuroma, a Neo-plasm, Swelling, trauma, the tip of a dental drill, a spicule of cortical bone, a venous clot, how you sleep (positional), or an infection. None of which are anywhere close to anything "Malignant".
Go get a Panarex and a CT of the mandible ( tragal cartilage to the chin Button) and have it evaluated by a competent Oral Surgeon. They can trace out the neural pathways from Facial Nerve, 5th Nerve, Lingual, Inferior Alveolar, and mental nerve distributions.
A swimmers view x-ray might also be helpful, since you have irradiated the cervical areas.?
R Marx DDS OMS and J Kent DDS OMS have been investigating devitalization of Mandibular structures following Aredia, Zometa, etc administrations.
They have found a wide variety of causes ( other than Malignancies) for complaints such as yours.
Doc Voorhees is spot on.
