My husband is still trying to heal (no real bone growth yet) following surgery for repair of a femur fracture in June, which was myeloma-related. He takes Darzalex (daratumumab) monthly, two opioid painkillers regularly, and nothing else.
The last two months he has had a weeping, itchy rash that keeps going to new body areas. Hydrocortisone cream relieves it for awhile but doesn't last long. His oncologist hypothesized that it was a reaction to the pain medications. A friend who is a pain specialist said opioids only cause itching, not rash.
Does anybody have any ideas? Is this likely myeloma-related, something else popping up, or a medication-related reaction? He is scratching himself raw.

Re: Itchy rash during Darzalex treatment

My wife, 8 months after a stem cell transplant, experienced dollar size rashes on several parts of her body that came and went. These were extremely itchy, she wanted to scratch all the time. She tried all the remedies, too numerous to list, on this forum. Had a dermatologist do a biopsy with no definitive results. Nothing worked. Out of shear exasperation, she tried going gluten free. In 10 days all the rashes have disappeared and no new ones have surfaced. Might be worth a try.
Best to you and yours,
Wayne

Re: Itchy rash during Darzalex treatment
I'll pass that along to him. I don't know whether he would believe me. He normally won't change his diet, but you never know. He did start drinking organic coffee years ago when he found out nonorganic coffee gave him an itchy rash.
His oncologist currently thinks it's a reaction to the foreign protein in the Darzalex and gave him some steroid cream for it. The rash goes away for about a week after the Darzalex treatment, probably due to the concurrent steroid and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) they give him during the infusion, so we don't know yet whether the cream will help.
I'm glad going gluten-free worked for your wife. I hope that continues!
