Is my multiple myeloma smoldering now?

by nicluz on Mon Jun 13, 2011 8:57 am

My name is Nicola. I'm writing from Brescia, Italy (it's a small town near Milan; well, small for the USA standards!). I'm 32 years old and i was diagnosed in June 2010: multiple myeloma, stage 3.

After 3 cycles of Velcade and an autologous stem cell transplant (11/10) I achieved a CR (no M cells in bone marrow after a biopsy - here is called "BOM, Biopsia Osteomidollare", normal levels of free light chains K. and also L., immunofixation negative in serum and urine, normal electrophoresis).

Can I be now included in the "smoldering myeloma" group? Are the progression percentages (smoldering progressing to active myeloma) valid also for me? Can I (we) realistically hope for a drug that makes multiple myeloma a chronic disease, like imatinib with chronic myelogenous leukemia?

PS: Sorry for my english, but at school I studied French and I learned your language with songs and TV series – Dexter, mostly: where there's a blood expert, I am, of course :).

Thanks.
Nicola

I think the answer is "no": you are probably in remission now, but that's not the same as smoldering myeloma.

Your English was just fine, by the way. No need to apologize!
