I had a bone marrow biopsy in 2013 and the multiple myeloma specialist did not feel it necessary to do a skeletal survey. She said it just shows up a lot which could be confused with multiple myeloma, and often is not, and gives you a good dose of more radiation.
I also have sarcoid and renal involvement, and saw a nephrologist, who thinks I should have the skeletal survey xrays together with my next MGUS tests in December.
How good are these at showing lytic legions, and is it worth all that extra radiation, given that I have already had so much with CT scans for my lungs etc.?
I did have an MRI of my lower spine last year after a bad bout of sciatica, and that showed the usual arthritic changes, etc, but no lesions in that area.
Should I first do the blood and urine tests and see the results before having the survey?

Re: Is it worth having a skeletal survey?
No. Unlikely they would do a PET scan here in Canada before doing the skeletal survey. I have had a bone marrow biopsy.
My thinking was first to do the blood work, and if the ratio has climbed further, then to do the survey. I have had a lot of radiation with so much testing over the years, and am trying to keep things to a minimum, if possible.
Thanks for your reply.
