Insurance Question - Allo Transplantation

by Guest1 on Fri Oct 04, 2013 1:38 pm

Hello-

Is there a way, ahead of time, to find out if an insurance company covers an Allo transplant? I am pre-certified on my wife's insurance which is United, but I get free insurance at work thru Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield. I don't want my wife to feel trapped at a job for 5 years because I have to stay on her insurance "if and when" I need an Allo.

Thanks!

Sure. Your benefits (HR) person should be able to get that for you. Make sure they actually copy you the page where it says it is covered. My husband has Blue Cross of Michigan, and they paid for his autologous transplant at Mayo.

Yeah but I think with an Allo, it might be different. Maybe I'm wrong, but an insurance company will only approve if the Allo is deemed part of a clinical trial?

Each insurance company is different - and sometimes each person that you talk to at that company! That is why it is important to see that it is covered in writing.
