Insurance cover stem cell transplant

by Karen C on Wed Jul 16, 2014 7:58 pm

I need a stem cell transplant, and will have to travel out of state to get it since no one does them where I live. My oncologist has been working with a treatment center, and I flew to it in May for a pre-requisite consult at my own expense.

Just a couple of days before I was scheduled to fly back for the actual transplant, my insurance company informed me that the facility I was supposed to go to was no longer a "participating provider". In fact, no one who does stem cell transplants is a participating provider!

I have a managed Medicare advantage plan. They are in the process of trying to negotiate a letter of agreement with the facility I have been planning to go to, but it's taking a long time (it's been almost 2 weeks), and I am worried they won't reach an agreement.

Has anyone else had this experience?
