Initially diagnosed with MGUS, may be smoldering now

Hi all,

I was exposed at 9/11. I had two cancers, thyroid in 2009, and breast in 2011 After some blood­work, I was diagnosed with MGUS at the end of 2014. Since then I have been getting blood drawn every three months. At my doctor's recommendation this past December, I had a bone marrow biopsy to confirm the existence of MGUS.

I recently met with my doctor to review the results. He explained that I have smoldering multiple myeloma. I will need some other tests to get a better picture of my condition and whether a clinical trial is indicated or not.

I appreciate all your posts and am grateful to join this group. My aim to get a realistic sense on what is happening so that I don't live in fear.

JDH,

Note that the only clinical trials available for treating smoldering myeloma (SMM) are for those patients with high-risk SMM. Treatment of high-risk SMM is still very much optional and multiple myeloma specialists continue to debate whether to treat high-risk SMM patients or not.
