In U.K can i get health insur. for abroad (USA) ?

by johanna on Sun May 12, 2013 7:58 am

HELLO,
my name's Johanna , my friend Ian has been diagnosed last august
with LCMM (light chain / kappa) aug. 2012
and received already CTD as first line of treatment. no breaks.(he had no plateau of remisson not in the true sense of the word) next week he will start Velcade and hopefully heading to stem cell after Velcade.

Our problem is that treatments in the U.K , we live in Scotland , is fairly standardized
and we are planning things ahead, a bit ...
we are thinking about a mini-ALLO transplant in case everything else fails
and also different chemo , that might not be available here....
some of the top clinics are in U.S.A and interesting trials as well

1. would it work to get a health insurance to cover him ?
would anybody get involved in someone who has multiple myeloma ?
Ian's point is fair enough when he says no one will cover him, to much high risk....
we don't know anything about this...and we may ask silly questions but we have to try everything... right ?
2. any sort of co-payement available if everything else fails ?
i'd like to mention : he had his own garrage(repair cars ) so self-impoyed...i guess...
and retired for 10 years now...
he is 61

any advice would be very appreciated !
thak you
johanna
