I'm a newbie here - mother diagnosed in 2008

by BeatMyeloma on Sun Mar 09, 2014 8:42 pm

Hi all,

My mother was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2008. She was extremely weakened upon admission into the hospital and actually was within days of dying from kidney damage. She turned it around (kidney function normal!) and went through several round of chemo with dex, Cytoxan [cyclophosphamide] and Velcade, followed by an auto SCT [stem cell transplant]. She achieved complete remission and has not had any sort of maintenance therapy.

This summer, though, her hematologist saw a spike in her numbers and upon re-testing this winter, the numbers (apologies, not sure what they are) continue to climb. A PET scan indicated some sort of mass in or near her uterus which isn't gynecolgical in origin.

She is due to speak with her hematologist soon -- very, very nervous but am hopeful that she will have another amazing response to treatment, She is feeling well except for some additional neuropathy. She said that there's no sign of myeloma in her blood, but this mass is causing numbers to go up. Such a strange, strange disease.

Very much hoping her doc will have some good options for her! The place she is being treated at is one of the top myeloma centers in the world.
