Hyperparathyroidism and multiple myeloma?

by concerneddaughter on Fri Apr 15, 2016 3:33 pm

Hi everyone.

My dad recently had his endocrinologist appointment and they told him he has hyperparathyroidism. All they said was he needs to take some vitamin D3.

So is it not a big deal? Because from what I've read online, hyperparathyroidism can cause strokes, heart failure, coma, and death. I mean, he has to go back to the endocrinologist in eight weeks, so I'm guessing they aren't too concerned about it.

I just feel like it's kind of concerning. :?

Amber,

Some of the common side effects of multiple myeloma can mimic primary hyperparathyroidism (hypercalcemia, vitamin D deficiency, etc). Was his parathyroid level actually found to be high and was it accompanied by a high calcium level? My GP thought I may have been suffering from hyperparathyroidism awhile back, but we ruled it out by doing a parathyroid level check.

I might suggest getting a second opinion if he truly has the condition, as well as discussing it with his onc. Note the Mayo's take on the watch-and-wait approach:
