Husband's treatment stopped (except for dex)

by yzoldowl on Sun Sep 03, 2017 10:23 am

My husband is in the hospital now, with multiple myeloma. He had pneumonia in October, 2016 and a chest x-ray showed a strange lesion which at first was thought to be on his right lung. In fact, it was the near-total destruction of his right fifth rib from the myeloma. He had what remained of that rib, plus an adjacent rib, removed in March. He has not recovered well from the surgery. He started treatment with Velcade, Revlimid, and dexamethasone in June, just after he got out of the hospital (again) after a severe case of pneumonia.

He has been very weak lately; he is in the hospital again to be stabilized and regain some strength. Doctors have made the decision to stop most of his treatment; he will continue on dex for the foreseeable future. At least he is eating again; for the past two-and-a-half weeks, he has eaten little to nothing.

Thank you each and every one for this forum. It is some comfort to me to know others are going through the same thing, and that my husband and I are not alone in this battle.

Our prayers go out to you and your husband. Hopefully he will regain his strength enough so they can restart treatment. Unfortunately, both Velcade and Revlimid can lower the white blood cell and ANC counts, making it more difficult to fight the pneumonia. Once he regains his strength, they can reintroduce those drugs to fight the myeloma.

Sending your husband healing and you strength to watch him go through yet another challenge with multiple myeloma. Once your husband recovers and his blood counts are better, he may restart the Revlimid and Velcade or be placed on a different treatment regimen.
