Husband just diagnosed

by grayce on Wed Dec 10, 2014 7:36 pm

Hello,

My husband was just diagnosed. I can't adequately wrap my head around this. I keep waiting for them to call back and say that their scans were wrong (and the biopsy, and the bloodwork).

We meet with a specialist next week to discuss treatment options. So far, we don't have much in the way of information. I know that there are several lesions, a few of which are significant in size and in areas where they would rather not operate. So far, no fractures and the pain is being managed fairly okay. He's not even 40 yet, which I would think is good, but the diagnosing doctor made it seem like a negative because its apparently more aggressive in younger patients. :?:

I am grateful that we are in a city where there are fantastic cancer centers. Hubs only has FMLA so I know he is eager to try and get all of the treatments done quickly in hopes that he can return to work before it runs out. I am not sure that that will be possible, but I guess we will have to wait and see.

My main concern is how well he will take the treatment and how effective it will be. I am encouraged by the positive thinking and supportive posts by the people here (I've been lurking for a week!) and I hope that we can find solutions and ways to get through this really difficult time.

Grayce.

Hi Grayce,

I am sorry that you have to deal with this and especially your husband being as young as he is.

I just want to let you know that my husband was able to continue working while receiving his treatments. He was on VRD (Velcade, Revlimid, dexamethasone), he took the Revlimid and dex orally, and scheduled his Velcade injections for after work.

Not sure if that is the treatment your husband's doctor has planned, but his treatments may not affect his work schedule at all.

Stay positive, wait for the specialist to proceed.

Your hubs should be able to work. Whatever the mix, read up on all the side effects. Some people have few side effects, but my husband becomes energized by the dex.

Good luck! You will be surprised how well he will do, especially with you by his side.

Many hugs and blessings!

Plm

Sorry to hear of your husband's diagnosis.

Chances are good that he'll get a stem cell transplant since he is so young and can handle that sort of therapy.

Depending on what type of work he has, make sure he doesn't quit!

I'm over 5 years out from diagnosis (46 years old) and have had 2 stem cell transplants and I almost sold our business when diagnosed.

I'm glad I didn't. For two reasons. I enjoy my work, and staying busy is probably the best advice I would give somebody. And earning money helps.

Good luck.

Grayce, I have been able to work around treatment since I was diagnosed 7 years ago. Each person's reaction to treatment is individualized, although forums like this can reveal commonalities.

An important factor for me has been understanding bosses and accomodating workplaces. Accommodation can be an altered or flexible work schedule. This is an ADA issue not just FMLA. In my case, I tried to reserve FMLA for use when I had a stem cell transplant rather than covering weekly treatment appointments.

Blessings to you and husband,
Cynthianyc

Thanks everyone!

Hubs' lesions are in his lower spine and hip, and are not so small. So his mobility is not good enough to return to work right now. Doing anything for too long (sitting, standing, walking, running) is a problem. He was off work right before diagnosis because he had back and hip pain, but they thought it was a disc problem, until the xray showed that it was really the lesions messing things up. :(

His job is pretty physical, so I doubt they will even entertain the notion of him working while doing treatments, unless the lesions shrink enough to allow him to do so comfortably. I am not sure how long it takes before the doctors notice some kind of difference in the size or quantity of the lesions. I'm compiling a laundry list of questions to ask the specialist so that we can get better educated and make the best decisions for his care.

If anyone has any helpful products or tips they can recommend for preparing for chemo, that would be greatly appreciated.
