I was on thalidomide/dex for about 6 months to get as much of a reduction as possible. I started in Stage 3 but responded well and quickly to the thalidomide, achieving about a 95% reduction prior to SCT. If I had developed neuropathy, however, my oncologist would have taken me off of thalidomide sooner. I did drop dex sooner because it was making me loopy.
