Tishpa, thanks for your info.
My husband has been on acyclovir twice daily as a precaution since he has been on chemo, although he has never had chicken pox, which is what sets of the shingles. At least he or his Mom do not remember him having them. The doc wants to be safe rather than sorry.

When I developed shingles I mentioned to the doctor that I had never had chicken pox. He said that I may have had a subclinical case of chicken pox, but that I definitely had been exposed to them at some point. One year when I was still teaching we had an epidemic of chicken pox in the school where I was teaching. Every child in my class eventually came down with a case. So, obviously I was exposed and may have had a subclinical case at that time.
I'm on acyclovir for life because of having had shingles. I had them on the left side of my head and face and left eye. I still have problems with my eye because of them. I never had any pain except for a mild tingling on my head prior to the blisters appearing on my face. I was quite sick when I had them.

I was also on acyclovir during the SCT and for a month or two afterwards.
One thing I neglected to mention that Tishpa reminded me of was the effect of the constant IV drip that I was on while in the hospital. I ended up gaining about fifteen pounds; that was all water weight. That was more than a bit uncomfortable! They put me on Lasix (furosemide) but that took a day or two get working and when it finally did, I was peeing every couple of hours (including every couple of hours of the night).
Although all of that excess weight was gone by the time I went home, my body decided to keep the "pee every two hours of the night" thing going for another couple of months. I asked a doctor about it and she told me that it takes a while for you to "unlearn" to do that but that I would get back to normal. She was right.
