How bad are these initial numbers?

by hopeful27 on Thu May 15, 2014 7:37 am

My mom was recently diagnosed...starting VRD this week. Her M spike was 8.25 and her kappa light chains were over 4000..please someone explain these to me! Is there hope? How do I know if this is the 15% type of myeloma that is more tough to beat? She had a rod put in her leg because of a 5 cm lesion. She isn't in much pain minus her leg healing even though she has multiple lesions all over her body. What other numbers should I look at in her hospital records we obtained? Any advice on what initial questions to ask the doctor this week? Help I am lost

FISH analysis from BMB plus beta 2, Albium, and LDH levels are some I can think of..

Do not fret - my numbers were worse when I was diagnosed 3 years ago. The most important thing is how she responds to the VRD. Complete remission is attainable with such numbers. I personally am a living proof of that. As to questions, the best approach would be to start educating yourself. The questions will come on their own. This website is a tremendous resource. Good luck to your mom.
