Hot flashes with no fever while on RVD / VRD

by wvjim on Thu Sep 24, 2015 5:51 pm

Hello everyone,

I get hot and sweat just sitting. It just comes on. I am on Velcade, Revlimid, and dex (RVD, VRD).

Does anyone have this and maybe what is the cause?

Thanks,

WVjim

P.S. - My temperature is normal.

Hi,

I've been on RVD for 5 years and only in the last 2 months have my hot moments commenced. They last three or four minutes. then disappear. I get 8 to 10 a day.

My temperature is normal. RVD and prednisone are my only meds.

They can come on anytime, no pattern seen yet. But it must be related to something.

58 year old male.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your reply. I am on the third round of Revlimid at 14 days on and 14 off. Could I ask if the meds you are on are all you have done and what other side effects have you had?

I am low on energy and sleepy a lot. Have had a hot attack this afternoon. 71 year old male. Thanks again for the info.

Hi Jim,

Sweating and hot flashes seem to happen to a lot of people, either during treatment for their myeloma, or sometimes (perhaps) as a result of the disease itself.

I haven't been able to figure out from previous postings here in the forum whether the culprit during treatment is the dexamethasone that people are on a lot of the time, or if it's frequently from drugs in the "immunomodulatory" class, which includes Revlimid, thalidomide, and Pomalyst. It's hard to tell because those drugs are often given together with dex.

If you go to this link, you'll see other discussions here in the forum on issues similar to what you're facing. I don't know whether you'll find any solution to the problem. But maybe you will.

That link, by the way, is one of many you'll find in this helpful posting here in the forum:

"Useful links to existing forum discussions"

It's got links that will take you quickly to discussions on all sorts of treatment- and side effect-related topics. I often find it really helpful for tracking down discussions that might be helpful.

Good luck!

Jonah

Hi Jonah,

Thanks for posting those links. Good to know how other folks handle this problem. I'm new to all this and feel like I need to learn about so many things and hope I don't ask too many dumb questions.

Thanks again,

WVjim

I received my first injection of Velcade yesterday. The hot flashes started approximately 10 hours after injection and I had trouble sleeping. I was also due to start Revlimid yesterday but they didn't deliver it on time (they want more pregnancy tests, although I had a surgery 1.5 years ago that prevents pregnancy - 47 years old ... already took 4 tests).

I also took my second round of dex yesterday. The dex didn't cause hot flashes when I took it for the first time last week. I deduce it's the Velcade that is the hot flash culprit for me. Then again, it could be a combination of the two meds.

I know that the dex is part of the culprit for me. I intentionally take my weekly dex dose at bed time so that I get the worst of the sweating during the night. When I took it during the day and was still working, I would break out in a dripping sweat while I was treating patients (I'm a retired PT). The one benefit at the time was that my patients loved my dex days because I had "hot pack" hands and they would ask for hands-on treatment.

During the warmer months, I get hot very quickly with profuse sweating. I've learned to carry a handkerchief with me at all times to mop up the sweat. When I have a speaking engagement, I now carry a small electric fan with me so that I have a constant flow of air on me to help with the increased sweating when I am mildly stressed. But, on the other hand, during the winter I get cold much more easily than I used to.

One thing that I also do when I know that I might have one of my hot attacks is I wear one of the neck scarves with beads in it that you can hydrate. As the water evaporates in the beads it cools you off. The temperature sensors for your core temperature are in the neck so the scarf helps to cool your core and have fewer problems with hot attacks. This helps me some, but not completely.

Thank you Ms. Nancy for the tips. I take my dex in the morning and haven't had an issue thus far.

Tomorrow will be my second injection of Velcade. Hopefully I will avoid further hot flashes. At least after the first injection, it was "kind enough" to wait until the evening when I was home before roasting me!

Best, Vera from NY.
