Is a hospital admission at diagnosis common?

by dogmom on Wed Jan 06, 2016 12:32 pm

We soon will have our first oncologist appointment since my husband was diagnosed about 3 weeks ago. I am sure one of the first things they will schedule is a bone marrow biopsy and bone scans. He is so ready to get on with treatment.

Has anyone been admitted on their first visit due to low hemoglobin, high calcium, etc?

I am taking a small suitcase just in case.

Thanks.

As my symptoms presented themselves, I was only admitted after my neurologist reviewed my blood tests and diagnosed hypercalcemia. I spent 3 days connected to an IV. After that, it was a blur. I had my first of three kyphoplasty procedures, had my initial bone marrow biopsy, had a medi port inserted, and started my initial induction therapy, all outpatient.

From initially hurting my back to the start of Velcade, Revlimid, and dexamethasone (VRD) treatment (4 months), I only spent those 3 days as an inpatient.

Good luck to you both!

The only time I was in the hospital was when I was getting the hard core chemo the days before transplant. Besides those four days, no others!

Kully, how high was your calcium at that time? My husband's last one a month ago at the time of diagnosis by PCP was 10.1. Thanks

Dogmom, my calcium after 3 days of treatment was 9.9. I was unable to find the blood work results for prior to that point. At that time, I was unaware of this journey I was upon and didn't procure a personal copy.

Again, best wishes!

On a Friday morning I went to my family doctor to have my blood dawn. We were looking for a explanation for my symptoms, which included fatigue, shortness of breath, and an apparently spontaneous broken rib. That evening at 7 my doctor called and told me to go to the ER, since my hemoglobin was at 6.3, dangerously low.

The results were confirmed at the hospital and I was started on a transfusion. I was admitted at that time. I stayed the weekend so that I could get a bone marrow biopsy first thing Monday morning.

Thank you for all your replies. I hope my husband's labs, etc, are well enough so he will not have to be admitted tomorrow.

I was admitted to confirm what was wrong with me. I was not able to stand without fainting, plus had irregular heart beats. I was admitted to internal medicine, not oncology. I had a bone marrow biopsy in the hospital and stayed in the hospital for a week while they stabilized me and, after my first chemo and a bunch of tests, I was allowed to go home. I had a rarer issue called hyperviscocity syndrome, plus the anemia at blood transfusion level, and high calcium issues.

After I was admitted to the hospital due to renal failure, my blood tests were inconclusive as to the cause. I had no lesions. The doctor suspected multiple myeloma, and a bone marrow biopsy was done. Two days later, I had my first chemo treatment (Velcade shot) administered in my hospital bed.

So things may move quickly.
