I was wondering if any of you have had a change in lifestyle since you got diagnosed?
I am a biomedical student who firmly believes in scientific studies and documented effects. However, I am also open minded about the possible health benefits of a good diet, exercise, and good mental health.
That's why I'm trying to eat a diet consisting mainly of plant-based foods with lots of fruit and vegetables. And it does seem like foods like turmeric may have anticancer effects? I do yoga every day and meditate often. These are all things my mum also has adopted now that she is a cancer patient.
Have any of you any thoughts on this?
It is very difficult to obtain any information about this because there are all sorts of videos and stories about people who have "cured their cancer" due to these things. I even saw just now a video from a chiropractor who has cured his multiple myeloma with his chiropractic approach, removing plastic from his life, etc., etc. What the x&%?
There isn't anyone who has been declared cured of multiple myeloma yet?! It is dangerous to persuade people to lean away from western medicine and go for a "holistic approach".
My frustration is ... where does one differentiate between quackery and something "valid", if you know what I mean?

Re: Holistic approaches to multiple myeloma
Hi Kristine,
The questions you've asked come up often here in the forum, and there are many people here interested in holistic / complementary / alternative approaches to multiple myeloma. Because you may find it helpful to see what people already have said on these subject, I've included below some forum searches related to your questions:
This link will take you to some discussions on holistic / alternative approaches in general:
https://myelomabeacon.org/forum/search.php?keywords=alternative+complementary+holistic&terms=any&author=&sc=1&sf=titleonly&sr=topics&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search
This is a list of discussions about supplements -- generally, as well as specific supplements
https://myelomabeacon.org/forum/search.php?keywords=supplement+supplements+curcumin+turmeric+ip6+lipoic-marijuana&terms=any&author=&sc=1&sf=titleonly&sr=topics&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search
Finally, this is a list of discussions on a few specific alternative treatment regimens or complementary therapies, as well as diet- and lifestyle-related discussions:
https://myelomabeacon.org/forum/search.php?keywords=ketogenic+gonzalez+antineoplaston+diet+lifestyle&terms=any&author=&sc=1&sf=titleonly&sr=topics&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search
If you want to see if there are discussions about a specific topic not covered in these searches, just type the keyword for the topic (e.g., turmeric) in the forum search box, and see what comes up. (One piece of advice: Unless you use the advanced search feature, it's best to type a single keyword in the search box. The more keywords you type, the fewer results you get.)
I hope this helps a bit. Best wishes to you and your mother,
Cheryl

Re: Holistic approaches to multiple myeloma
Some of those claiming to have an holistic or alternative approach to health in general, and specifically when fighting cancer, are just using those two words as an excuse to propagate "cures" that do not have to be validated by trials and theories / articles that do not need to be peer reviewed or in other ways scientifically substantiated.
But what you are doing here, from a holistic viewpoint, is probably just intelligent. The treatment may help fighting multiple myeloma back, or in some cases even cure some very few patients.
I believe, although it is not yet fully based on research, that a healthy life style, being in balance and not too stressed and being confident that your own immune system will do it's part, etc., etc., will make a difference. Maybe it will prolong your life, maybe it will even play a part of being cured, and it will for sure make the quality of the life, while you still have it, better.
Thus I see no contradiction between your two approaches: The holistic and the scientific.
