I have IgA multiple myeloma and have been in remission for 18 months as a result of a stem cell transplant. I try to be quite active and have been told by my orthopedic specialist that my right hip is now "bone on bone" and everything being equal a hip transplant is in order.
My question would be to the advisability of a transplant given my low immune system and the fact that I have cancer and may not have the strength to ward off possible infections as a result of the surgery.
Any thougths would be helpful.

Re: Hip replacement and multiple myeloma
If you are in remission, there is no contraindication to have the proposed hip surgery. If you are in remission, your immune system is only marginally compromised and the risk is minimally higher than an individual who does not have myeloma. I would recommend that you proceed with the surgery.

Re: Hip replacement and multiple myeloma
I got two hips when i was in my early forties. i can't speak to the cancer perspective. But I can speak to the wonder of hip pain free life. My multiple myeloma diagnosis came about partly due to rampant bone pain which we thought was an escalation of arthritis. With Velcade / dex, bone pain is almost zero and my hips are sound. They are over a decade old and I do worry about what will happen when they need work now. I have a lesion near a hip bone cup as well.
Hip replacement gave me back my life. Bone on bone is some serious stuff as you know. It always get worse. If your med team gives the green light it would be a reasonable option. I would certainly want them repaired and sound before any advancing lesion activity in my possible future. Dealing with multiple myeloma and a bad hip has got to be a royal pain. My thoughts are with you.

Re: Hip replacement and multiple myeloma
I had 8 lesions in my hip from multiple myeloma. I did 4 weeks of radiation and then had the replacement. I was stage 3 or 4 when I did the hip replacement. Then I did treatment and SCT. Shouldn't be a problem to do it now, I would think.
