High urine protein despite remission

by Monaelaine on Wed Nov 05, 2014 12:03 am

Hi, I was diagnosed in December 2012 with multiple myeloma and have had radiation, a stem cell transplant, and chemo. I have had a good response and am basically in remission.

One issue I have is a high urine protein. Just wondering if others have had this and what your experience was.

I just went to a nephrologist today and am awaiting his reply.

Thanks so much,
Mona

Do you have light chain / Bence Jones myeloma? and / or known kidney disease, with raised blood pressure?

It may be the proteinuria is unrelated to the myeloma but to kidney function, either as a result of damage through myeloma or damage through other mechanisms. Your nephrologist will no doubt investigate / discuss.

Hello,

I too still have high urine protein. I was diagnosed in 2012, had chemo and an autologous stem cell transplant on August 19, 2013. I was also treated with radiation and hormone therapy for prostate cancer this past summer. I have been in remission now for the past four months. I am taking a Revlimid maintenance regimen of 10 mg. I also take the monthly infusion of Zometa. I really don't know what is causing the high urine protein.

I also have been diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma. I have a lesion in each kidney, both less than 2 cm, which we have been watching for the past 2 years. I am due to get another MRI in December 2014.

I am also still looking for the cause of the protein, but no real definitive answers.

Take care, God Bless

Protein "Leaking" is often associated with altered albumin / aldesterone levels.

It is also not necessarily limited to multiple myeloma as a disease. There are other non-MM causes, including nephril damage, mechanical blockages, elevated BP's, sodium/potassium imbalances, etc.

Good luck with your Nephrologist. Hopefully, he/she has you peeing like a racehorse, soon.!
