Valerie: We're back in the hospital, and this time I refuse to take him home until they get his pain under control. The Oncologist thinks the Velcade is the culprit, so he's stopping that (but continuing the Dex). This afternoon, a Pain Management Specialist will see him.
Hope your hubby feels better, too.
Keep in touch!

Re: High Risk Myeloma - outlook
Does he have lesions where he is having the pain? If so, have they talked about doing radiation? Radiation would shrink the lesions and reduce or eliminate the pain.
My husband, Tom, has some severe pain in his left thigh. He had a PET scan done on Wednesday which revealed no cancer in his left thigh. He does have cancer in his lower back and we think he may have a pinched nerve that is causing his pain. The oncologist just gives him narcotics and doesn't seem to be trying to figure out why he has such terrible pain there. We go to the Humphrey Cancer Center in Robbinsdale, MN. Next Thursday we are getting another opinion at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. We are very anxious to go to the Mayo Clinic!
Hope they find the root of your husband's pain and do something about it!

Re: High Risk Myeloma - outlook
Sarah - I am sorry to hear your husband is in the hospital. My husband's pain specialist believes his pain was also Velcade related, though the oncologist originally didn't think so but nevertheless she discontinued the Velcade because he was having such a difficult time with it and also had neuropathy in his feet. The pain specialist upped his neurontin stating that the original amount that was prescribed was not enough. He is going to have a nerve block next week and we will see if that offers him relief. He is optimistic about it. Also, this has been his best week in a long time and he even had an appetite. Pretty ironic considering the grim news we received this week. He starts the Revlimid/dex treatment today so hoping he will get a response.
I hope Sarah and Barb that your husbands can get some pain relief and I am sending prayers your way. Barb - my husband had radiation on his T-3 vertebrae when he was initially diagnosed and has not had any more pain in that area.
Good luck and don't forget to take care of yourselves.
