High risk myeloma or not?

by JillS on Sun Dec 29, 2013 4:05 pm

Hi

I was diagnosed with IGA lambda myeloma almost 3 years ago and immediately started CTD chemo. I achieved a quick complete response and my light chains have been normal ever since and I am not on any treatment at this time. I decided NOT to have SCT at that time, going against the advice of my myeloma specialist. When I had my first bmb, the hospital at that time did not carry out cytogenetic testing. My follow up bmb a year later was normal and hence no abnormalities showed up in the cytogenetic testing. I was warned that this did not necessarily mean that I didn't have abnormalities.

I am very grateful for the time i have had in remission, but often wonder whether the length of my remission indicates that I am less likely to have high risk chromosomal abnormalities. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hi Jill,

You might find this article to be somewhat helpful. You are basically asking whether your are more likely to have karyotypic stability by the fact that you are in remission and your disease isn't progressing . According to this article, karyotypic instability increases with the advancement of the disease. However, based on my quick read, the article doesn't come out and directly state whether the lack of disease advancement in turn correlates to greater stability.
