High ESR

by Vijayabharathi_C on Tue Mar 05, 2013 3:16 am

My mother was diagonsed with multiple myeloma last may 2011, went 6 cycles of Revlimid 25mg. After electrophorosis we found M.Protein to be nil. But not able to do SCT due to some circumstances, we followed conventional theraphy. Disease relapsed on Aug 2012 and after 3 cycles of Velcade, again M-protein is Nil.. Again conventional maintainence for last few days.. But now today on regular blood test, we found high ESR = 61. wbc count also decreased to 4.1. All other paramters are normal

Kindly advise whether we had to concern..

The ESR is not a specific marker of myeloma. It may be elevated in older patients for other reasons that are not necessarily a problem.

Thanks Dr.Jason. Yes offcourse ESR is varying for past few months. Two weeks back we took, it dropped to 16.Last week we went for routine SPEP, and we found M-Protein as Nil.ESR become now 40. She is currently in Revlimid maintainence, as like earlier she is suffering from myelosuppression due to side effect of Revlimid.Today we took the blood count, we found WBC count to be 2.8, alarming low. Current myeloma specialist we are referring, asked us to stop the medicine for another week, if WBC count improves, start the maintainence again..
