High ESR and uric acid?--help needed with lab results

by smyrna on Sat Nov 30, 2013 4:17 pm

My mother was diagnosed 3 months ago with smoldering multiple myeloma. She has been telling me she has significant pain on her feet and hands recently (arthritis-like pain). She has gone in for her first 3-monthly checkup yesterday. The protein electrophoresis results have not come up yet but I can see the CBC online, and her ESR has risen from 40 to 61. Her uric acid is also high at 7.1 mg/dl (used to be within range). Calcium is normal. Spot urine shows 6 mg/dl of protein (all tests were done midday, not on an empty stomach). Do these results have a direct relation to the myeloma? I have read online that myeloma can trigger gout or rheumatoid arthritis. Is there anything she can do about the pain? Any insight would be much appreciated.

First off, I'm not a doc. Both one's ESR and uric acid levels can indeed be elevated by myeloma.

Suggest you wait to get the more complete picture with all of your lab tests and then debrief with your doc.

There are drugs such as allopurinol that can help with the uric acid issues, but obviously your doc needs to weigh in on that front.

Thank you, Multibilly. You most certainly helped with my anxiety over the ESR & uric acid, while waiting for info on the usual markers...
