Hi,
One of the side effects my sister is getting from her chemo treatment is high blood pressure. Today it is 180/100. The doctors treat it with medication, but it only reduced marginally. Her doctors do not see it currently as a reason to adjust or cancel her treatment. She is scared of both the side effect and the possibility of the chemo being cancelled.
Has anyone experienced high blood pressure as a side effect of treatment and, if you did, what happened as a result?

To be clear for those on the forum, it sounds like the treatment here is PAD (VDD) = Velcade + doxorubicin + dex. Also, she is likely receiving Zometa or Aredia.

Re: High blood pressure as side effect of treatment
Hello Gala and Multibilly,
I have gone through both low and high blood pressure. During the first five cycles, it was low blood pressure, going as low as 99/65. After the 8th cycle, it has been high blood pressure. It went as high as 205/115. And it was not stable.
I was sent to a cardiologist and had my EKG, echo and second ultrasound of the abdomen. All perfect. BP med dose was increased and two new medicines have been added. Now after almost ten days, BP is lower and stable.
I am on Revlimid 25 mg, dexamethasone 16 mg, and Zometa every three month.
Thank you.

Re: High blood pressure as side effect of treatment
Gala,
When I was on carfilzomib (Kyprolis), I definitely had high blood pressure as a side effect. Normally, my blood pressure was about 120s/70s. On carfilzomib it went up to 150s or 160s over 90s. That's a big increase, and would definitely have deleterious effects. I was started on metoprolol to control it.
Then it was discovered that the carfilzomib was also causing actual heart and lung damage - the high blood pressure was just part of that. So it was stopped, and my pressure seemed to improve (though maybe not quite back to previous levels). Fortunately, it looks like the structural heart and lung damage seen on my echocardiogram is healing, probably completely!

Re: High blood pressure as side effect of treatment
Multibilly, thank you so much for clarifying the treatment regimen.
MMFeb16,15 and Tracy J, thank you for sharing your experiences. Tracy, it is good to know that the damage caused is reversing and, MMFeb16,15, that your blood pressure has stabilized. What I learned from your responses is that it needs to be monitored closely for organ damage and to establish what causes the high blood pressure, so that the treatment can be adjusted if necessary.
