Re: Hiccups from dexamethasone
I am not certain why but I do know it happens - I deal with them regularly. I made my team aware after I began treatment, during that time it was high dose 4 days @ 40mg a day and the hiccups lasted close to 2 hours at a time, but since then they cut the dose down to 20mg 1 time a week and my hiccups typically last 10-15 minutes with the occasional 45 minute attack.

I am not sure why either, but it can be managed.

Re: Hiccups from dexamethasone
Thanks for the responses! I just find it interesting that hiccups are a side effect of a drug. I always hiccups just had to do with eating something too fast.

Re: Hiccups from dexamethasone
Would love to know why as well.
The first time I ever had Dex, I got hiccups for 2 days straight. It was horrible and nothing helped. Made if very hard to sleep when you hiccup every 5 seconds. (that was after 2 days of insomnia from the Dex)
The 2nd week I got Dex, I got them again, but only for a day. The 3rd week, no more, so my body must have just gotten used to them.

Re: Hiccups from dexamethasone
I had hiccups following my initial 40 mg dex ... all day and into the night the following day. They were very bad and my team brought them under complete control with baclofen, a muscle relaxant.
I am now on dex 20 mg four times a week, and the hiccups are gone and I no longer need the baclofen. It may be dose related or just a reaction to initial exposure.
I also take Prolosec the day before and day of my dex dose, since dex is hard on the stomach. It's a good idea to reduce the acid as much as possible.
Moderator's note: Wikipedia lists the following brand names for baclofen: Kemstro, Lioresal, Liofen, Gablofen, Beklo and Baclosan.
