Re: Hiccups and Cytoxan

Dexter,

Thanks for sharing the peanut butter home remedy.

I would like to know some minor details: Is the teaspoon licked slowly or taken in with a big gulp? With toast or just by itself?

Thanks.

Dan was given a different antipsychotic drug, Depakote, when he started having hiccups in the hospital. They went away, and never returned to the extent of needing treatment. It felt a little odd to be prescribed an antipsychotic, but many drugs have multiple purposes.

When he had them, they were exhausting, and exacerbated pain from his spinal compression fractures.

That's interesting about the Depakote, tib. Thanks for sharing that information.

Here's a little known fact -- If you look up the active ingredients of Depakote, you'll find that one of them is valproic acid (the other is sodium valproate, which is the sodium salt of valproic acid). Valproic acid, it turns out, is a first generation HDAC inhibitor. If "HDAC inhibitor" sounds familiar, it's because the drug panobinostat, which was just approved for myeloma in the States, is also an HDAC inhibitor, although I believe it's considered a later-generation HDAC inhibitor.

The main reason I bring this up is because there is some research indicating that valproic acid may have anti-myeloma activity. You'll find examples by doing a quick search like "valproic acid myeloma". I think there are even a few articles here at the Beacon on the topic.

I realize this is an older thread, but I am fairly recently diagnosed with IgG kappa multiple myeloma and am on Velcade, cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone. I just finished my first cycle. I experienced those non-stop hiccups the day after the first injection and taking the pills. I took 2 5 mg metoclopramide (Metonia, Reglan) and one 20 mg Apo-Omeprazole (Prilosec, Losec), and that stopped the hiccups. Only took the metoclopramide thereafter as needed. But I ceased having hiccups with subsequent treatment and therefore stopped taking the metoclopramide.

Hope this helps. A fellow patient recommended sauerkraut as a more natural remedy.
